ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Many individuals throughout Los Angeles County are at risk for cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, some cancers, preventable disabilities and preventable deaths. Furthermore, an increasing number of children and adults are being classified as overweight or obese. These staggering facts led the late Dr. Gregory R. Dantzler and Rev. Charles Tolber to formulate the AFHA Wellness and Education Program.

Hosted by Apostolic Faith Home Assembly, Inc. (AFHA), a faith-based organization in Central Los Angeles for over 80 years, this event is one of many community based multi-level, culturally-sensitive nutrition and physical activity health promotion programs.
As a whole, the Program demonstrates the historical mission of faith-based organizations to address the comprehensive health and social service needs of community residents and congregation members. Our organization 1) offers health promotion activities,
2) provides leadership through individual and group empowerment determined by locality development, 3) encourages support,
4) promotes community-wide health behavior change and 5) provides Family Centered Education.

The AFHA Wellness and Education Program is designed to provide financial assistance for college, as well as wellness services for the community; reflecting the "One Stop Shop" philosophy. Program strategies are comprehensively designed utilizing 1) community-based social marketing, 2) formative research, 3) community outreach, 4) peer education, 5) age and culturally appropriate nutrition and physical activity education.  All these working together help to reduce barriers that impact participation and retention.

We uphold our mission of helping the WHOLE PERSON.
